कृष्ण चालीसा एक भक्ति गीत है जो भगवान कृष्ण पर आधारित है। कृष्ण चालीसा एक लोकप्रिय प्रार्थना है जो 40 छन्दों से बनी है। कई लोग जन्माष्टमी सहित भगवान कृष्ण को समर्पित अन्य त्योहारों पर कृष्ण चालीसा का पाठ करते हैं।

॥ दोहा ॥

बंशी शोभित कर मधुर, नील जलद तन श्याम। 
अरुण अधर जनु बिम्बा फल, पिताम्बर शुभ साज॥ 
पूर्ण इन्द्र (पूर्ण इंदु), अरविन्द मुख, पिताम्बर शुभ साज।
जय मनमोहन मदन छवि, कृष्णचन्द्र महाराज॥

अर्थ: भगवान श्री कृष्ण जिनके हाथों की शोभा मीठी तान वाली बांसुरी बढाती है। जिनका श्याम वर्णीय तन नील कमल के समान लगता है। आपके लाल-लाल होठ बिंबा फल जैसे हैं और नयन कमल के समान मोह लेने वाले हैं। आपका मुख कमल के ताजा खिले हुए फूल की तरह है और पीले वस्त्र तन की शोभा बढा रहे हैं। हे मन को मोह लेने वाले, हे आकर्षक छवि रखने वाले, राजाओं के भी राजा कृष्णचंद्र, आपकी जय हो |

जय यदुनन्दन जय जगवन्दन। जय वसुदेव देवकी नन्दन॥ 
जय यशुदा सुत नन्द दुलारे। जय प्रभु भक्तन के दृग तारे॥ 
जय नट-नागर नाग नथैया। कृष्ण कन्हैया धेनु चरैया॥ 
पुनि नख पर प्रभु गिरिवर धारो। आओ दीनन कष्ट निवारो॥ 
वंशी मधुर अधर धरी तेरी। होवे पूर्ण मनोरथ मेरो॥ 
आओ हरि पुनि माखन चाखो। आज लाज भारत की राखो॥ 

अर्थ: हे यदु नंदन समस्त जगत के लिए वंदनीय, वासुदेव व देवकी पुत्र श्री कृष्ण आपकी जय हो। हे यशोदा पुत्र नंद के दुलारे आपकी जय हो। अपने भक्तों की आंख के तारे प्रभु श्री कृष्ण आपकी जय हो। हे शेषनाग पर नृत्य करने वाले नट-नागर आपकी जय हो, आपकी जय हो गऊओं को चराने वाले किशन कन्हैया। हे प्रभु आप एक बार फिर से कष्ट रुपी पहाड़ को अपनी ऊंगली के नाखून पर उठाकर दीन-दुखियों का उद्धार करो। हे प्रभु अपने होठों से लगी इस बांसुरी की मधुर तान सुनाओ, मेरी मनोकामनाएं पूरी कर मुझ पर कृपा बरसाओ प्रभु। हे भगवान श्री कृष्ण दोबारा आकर फिर से मक्खन का स्वाद चखो, हे प्रभु अपने भक्तों की लाज आपको रखनी होगी।

गोल कपोल, चिबुक अरुणारे। मृदु मुस्कान मोहिनी डारे॥ 
रंजित राजिव नयन विशाला। मोर मुकुट वैजयंती माला॥ 
कुण्डल श्रवण पीतपट आछे। कटि किंकणी काछन काछे॥ 
नील जलज सुन्दर तनु सोहे। छवि लखि, सुर नर मुनिमन मोहे॥ 
मस्तक तिलक, अलक घुंघराले। आओ कृष्ण बांसुरी वाले॥ 

अर्थ: हे श्री कृष्ण आपके बाल रुप में गोल मटोल लाल-लाल गाल उस पर आपकी मृदु मुस्कान मन को मोह लेती है। आप अपनी कमल के समान बड़ी-बड़ी आंखों से सबको जीत लेते हैं। आपके माथे पर मोर पंखी मुकुट व गले में वैजयंती माला है। आपके कानों में स्वर्ण वर्णीय कुंडल व कमर पर किंकणी बहुत ही सुंदर लग रही हैं। नीले कमल के समान आपका सुंदर तन बहुत आकर्षक है आपकी छवि मनुष्य, ऋषि, मुनि देवता आदि सबका मन मोह लेती है। आपके माथे पर तिलक व घुंघराले बाल भी आपकी शोभा को बढ़ाते हैं। हे बांसुरी वाले श्री कृष्ण आप आ जाओ।

करि पय पान, पुतनहि तारयो। अका बका कागासुर मारयो॥ 
मधुवन जलत अग्नि जब ज्वाला। भै शीतल, लखितहिं नन्दलाला॥ 

सुरपति जब ब्रज चढ़यो रिसाई। मसूर धार वारि वर्षाई॥ 
लगत-लगत ब्रज चहन बहायो। गोवर्धन नखधारि बचायो॥ 

अर्थ: हे श्री कृष्ण आपने स्तनपान के जरिये जहर पिलाकर मारने के लिए आयी पुतना राक्षसी का संहार किया तो वहीं अकासुर, बकासुर और कागासुर जैसे राक्षसों का वध भी किया। जब पूरे मधुबन को आग की लपटों ने घेर रखा था हे नंदलाल, आपको देखते ही मधुबन की सारी आंच ठंडी हो गई। जब देवराज इंद्र क्रोधवश ब्रज पर चढ़ाई करने आए तो उन्होंनें मूसलधार बरसात की। ऐसा लग रहा था मानों पूरा ब्रज डूब जाएगा, लेकिन हे कृष्ण मुरारी आपने अपनी सबसे छोटी ऊंगली के नाखून पर गोवर्धन पर्वत को उठाकर ब्रजवासियों की रक्षा की।

लखि यसुदा मन भ्रम अधिकाई। मुख महं चौदह भुवन दिखाई॥ 
दुष्ट कंस अति उधम मचायो। कोटि कमल जब फूल मंगायो॥ 

नाथि कालियहिं तब तुम लीन्हें। चरणचिन्ह दै निर्भय किन्हें॥ 
करि गोपिन संग रास विलासा। सबकी पूरण करी अभिलाषा॥ 

केतिक महा असुर संहारयो। कंसहि केस पकड़ि दै मारयो॥ 
मात-पिता की बन्दि छुड़ाई। उग्रसेन कहं राज दिलाई॥

अर्थ: हे श्रीकृष्ण अपनी लीला दिखाते हुए आपने माता यशोदा को बाल रुप में अपने मुख में 14 ब्रह्मांड के दर्शन करवाकर उनके भ्रम को दूर किया। जब दुष्ट कंस ने उत्पात मचाते हुए करोड़ों कमल के फूल देने की मांग की तब आपने ही कालिया का शमन किया व जीत हासिल कर सभी ब्रजवासियों की रक्षा की। हे श्री कृष्ण आपने गोपियों के संग रास रचाकर उनकी इच्छाओं को भी पूरा किया। आपने कितने ही असुरों का संहार किया। कंस जैसे राक्षस को आपने बाल पकड़ कर मार दिया। कंस द्वारा जेल में बंद अपने माता-पिता को कैद से मुक्त करवाया। आपने ही उग्रसेन को उसके राज्य का सिंहासन दिलाया।

महि से मृतक छहों सुत लायो। मातु देवकी शोक मिटायो॥ 
भौमासुर मुर दैत्य संहारी। लाये षट दश सहसकुमारी॥ 
दै भिन्हीं तृण चीर सहारा। जरासिंधु राक्षस कहं मारा॥ 
असुर बकासुर आदिक मारयो। भक्तन के तब कष्ट निवारियो॥ 
दीन सुदामा के दुःख टारयो। तंदुल तीन मूंठ मुख डारयो॥ 
प्रेम के साग विदुर घर मांगे। दुर्योधन के मेवा त्यागे॥ 
लखि प्रेम की महिमा भारी। ऐसे श्याम दीन हितकारी॥ 

अर्थ: आपने माता देवकी के छह मृत पुत्रों को लाकर उन्हें दुख से मुक्ति दिलाई। आपने भौमासुर, मुर दैत्यों का संहार करके 16 हजार एक सौ राजकुमारियों को उनके चंगुल से छुड़ाया। आपने ही घास के तिनके को चीरकर भीम को जरासंध के मारने का ईशारा किया। हे श्री कृष्ण आपने ही बकासुर आदि का वध करके अपने भक्तों को कष्टों से मुक्ति दिलाई है।
हे द्वारकाधीश श्री कृष्ण आपने ही अपने सखा विप्र श्री सुदामा के दु:खों को दूर किया। कच्चे चावलों की उनकी भेंट को आपने सहर्ष स्वीकार किया व बड़े चाव से उन्हें खाया। आपने दुर्योधन की मेवा को त्यागकर विद्वान विदुर के घर प्रेम से बनाए गए साग को ग्रहण किया। हे श्री कृष्ण आपके प्रेम की महिमा बहुत महान है। हे श्याम आप दीन-हीन का सदैव भला करते हैं।


भारत के पारथ रथ हांके। लिए चक्र कर नहिं बल ताके॥ 
निज गीता के ज्ञान सुनाये। भक्तन ह्रदय सुधा वर्षाये॥ 
मीरा थी ऐसी मतवाली। विष पी गई बजाकर ताली॥ 
राना भेजा सांप पिटारी। शालिग्राम बने बनवारी॥ 
निज माया तुम विधिहिं दिखायो। उर ते संशय सकल मिटायो॥ 

अर्थ: हे श्री कृष्ण आपने ही महाभारत के युद्ध में अर्जुन का सारथी बन रथ को हांका व अपने हाथों में सुदर्शन चक्र ले कर बलशाली योद्धाओं के शीष उतार लिये। आपने गीता का उपदेश देकर अपने भक्तों के हृद्य में अमृत की  वर्षा की। हे श्री कृष्ण आपका स्मरण करते-करते मीरा मतवाली हो गई वह विष को भी हंसते-हंसते पी गई। राणा ने कितने ही यत्न किए मीरा को मरवाने के लेकिन आपकी कृपा से सांप भी फूलों का हार बना और पत्थर की मूरत में भी आप प्रकट हुए। हे प्रभु आपने अपनी माया दिखाकर अपने भक्तों के सारे संशय दूर किये।
तब शत निन्दा करी तत्काला। जीवन मुक्त भयो शिशुपाला॥ 
जबहिं द्रौपदी टेर लगाई। दीनानाथ लाज अब जाई॥ 
तुरतहिं वसन बने ननन्दलाला। बढ़े चीर भै अरि मुँह काला॥ 
अस नाथ के नाथ कन्हैया। डूबत भंवर बचावत नैया॥ 
सुन्दरदास आस उर धारी। दयादृष्टि कीजै बनवारी॥ 
नाथ सकल मम कुमति निवारो। क्षमहु बेगि अपराध हमारो॥ 
खोलो पट अब दर्शन दीजै। बोलो कृष्ण कन्हैया की जै॥ 


अर्थ: हे प्रभु जब शिशुपाल के सौ पाप माफ करने के बाद जब उसका पाप का घड़ा भर गया तो आपने उसका शीश उतार कर उसे जीवन से मुक्त कर दिया। जब संकट के समय आपकी भक्त द्रौपदी ने पुकारा कि हे दीनानाथ लाज बचालो तो हे नंदलाल आप तुरंत अपनी भक्त की लाज रखने के लिए वस्त्र बन गए द्रौपदी का चीर बढ़ता गया और शत्रु दुशासन का मूंह काला हुआ। हे नाथों के नाथ किशन कन्हैया आप भंवर से भी डूबती नैया को बचाने वाले हो। हे प्रभु सुंदरदास ने भी अपने हृद्य में यही आस धारण की है कि आपकी दयादृष्टि मुझ पर बनी रहे। हे नाथ मेरी खराब बुद्धि का निवारण करो, मेरे पाप, अपराध को माफ कर दो। हे प्रभु अब द्वार खोल कर दर्शन दे दीजिए। सभी किशन कन्हैया की जय बोलें।

यह चालीसा कृष्ण का, पाठ करै उर धारि। 
अष्ट सिद्धि नवनिधि फल, लहै पदारथ चारि॥

अर्थ:जो कोई भी इस कृष्ण चालीसा का पाठ अपने हृदय में भगवान श्री कृष्ण को धारण करके करेगा, उसे आठों सिद्धियां नौ निधियां व चारों पदारथ अर्थात आयु, विद्या, यश और बल अथवा अर्थ, धर्म, काम और मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होगी।

Meaning:Lord Sri Krishna, glory to you! Glory to the son of Yadava family (milk vendors); Glory to the son of Vasudev and Devaki; Glory to the beloved son of Yashoda and Nanda; Glory to you, my Lord, the protector of devotees.

Lord Sri Krishna, glory to you! Glory to the versatile player; the tamer of the snake; Krishna, you are really the cowherd, the protector of cows. You have lifted the mountain with the nail of your little finger; Please come and destroy the troubles of the poor and the downtrodden.

Meaning: Lord Sri Krishna, your forehead is adorned with a tilak (a paste of either mud or Kumkum or Chandan), and your hairstyle looks wavy. Please come, Krishna, the bearer of the musical flute. As a baby, you have sucked out the life of the demoness Putaki; You have also destroyed the demons named Akasura, Bakasura, and Kagasura.

Lord Sri Krishna, when the wildfire broke out at Madhuvan, as the savior of people, Nandalala, you have swallowed the fire and immediately brought coolness. The king of Devas, Indra was furious once and ordained for the torrential downpour of rain on the land causing huge deluge.

Meaning: Lord Sri Krishna, when the entire Brij (the place where Krishna lived at the time) was under heavy floods, you have uplifted the Govardhan hill and brought all the beings under the hill and protected them from the extreme downpour. For clearing the doubts in the mind of Yeshoda, you have shown the fourteen worlds in your mouth to her.

Lord Sri Krishna, the wicked demon Kamsa was causing havoc, and he demanded that a crore of lotuses be sent to him. By killing him, you have saved all; You have overpowered the dangerous snake Kaliya, tamed and subdued it and provided protection to all.

Meaning: Lord Sri Krishna, you have fulfilled the heartfelt desires of all gopikas by playing with them as they wished. You have eliminated lots of demons; You have pulled the demon Kamsa by his hair, dragged him hard and killed him.

Lord Sri Krishna, by releasing the mother and father of Ugrasan from the bondage, you have given back the kingdom to Ugrasan. You have brought back from the underworld, the six dead sons of Mother Devaki and gave relief and happiness to her.

Meaning: Lord Sri Krishna, you have destroyed demons like Narakasur and Mura: You have also released the sixteen thousand maidens held as a hostage by Narakasura. You have taught Bhima as to how to kill demon Jarasandha by splitting and transposing the cut grass blades.

Lord Sri Krishna, by eliminating demons like Vrikkasur, you have removed the plights of your devotees. You have removed the sadness of the poor Sudaama by cheerfully eating three handfuls of pounded rice.

Meaning: Lord Sri Krishna, out of love, you have partaken the simple food at Vidhura’s house sacrificing the grand fare at Duryodhan’s house. I have understood your compassion for the poor. Oh Lord, this poor person bows to you with reverence.

Lord Sri Krishna, during Mahabharat, you have driven the chariot. You had a chakra (the holy wheel) on your hand, and you did not waver in your stand. You have cited and taught the wisdom of Bhagavad Gita thereby fulfilling the heartfelt desires of your ardent devotees.

Meaning: Lord Sri Krishna, Bhakt Meera, your ardent devotee was thoroughly engrossed in her devotion for you, and she happily drank even poison. When the King Banvaari had sent a basket containing a snake to you, you had taken the form of Shaligram (holy rock like substance found in rivers).

Lord Sri Krishna, you have revealed the powers of your illusions to Brahma, the writer of fates; By this revelation, you have cleared all his delusions. When Shishupala was blaming, criticizing and insulting you, you have killed him instantly.

Meaning: Lord Sri Krishna, when Draupathi pleaded to you “oh the protector of the downtrodden, please save me”, oh Nandalala, you have immediately supplied to her continuous flow of clothes, and the people assembled there were ashamed with ashen face and disbelief.

Lord Sri Krishna, we have endless desires, and you are our protector; As our guardian, you rescue the sinking boat of our life from the whirlpool of our desires. This Sundardas, holding the desires at heart is seeking your benevolent sight for the fulfillment of the wishes.

Kholo Pat Ab Darshan Deeje ।Bolo Krishna Kanhaiya Ki Jai ॥

Meaning: Lord Sri Krishna, please remove the ignorance from the mind of him (Sundardas) and please forgive his mistakes. May you bestow your kindness to him by giving darshan to him; We say “glory to you, Sri Krishna, our protector”.

Asht Siddhi Nav Niddhi Phal, Lahe Padaarath Chaari ॥


Meaning: This is Krishna Chalisa, read it from the heart! The person chanting this shall be bestowed with Ashta Siddhi (Eight yogic attributes such as (1) Anima – reducing the body size to that of an atom, (2) Mahima – enlarging the body size to infinity, (3) Garima – making the body heavy (4) Laghima – making the body light, (5) Prapti – being anywhere at will, (6) Prakyama – realizing one’s desires, (7) Isitva – supremacy over nature, and (8) Vasitva – control of natural forces) and Nava Nidhi (Nine types of wealth symbolized as (1) Mahapadma – great lotus, (2) Padma – regular lotus, (3) Shankha – conch, (4) Makara – crocodile, (5) Kachchapa – tortoise, (6) Kumud – precious stone, (7) Kunda – jasmine, (8) Nila – sapphire and (9) Kharva – dwarf). He will be acclaimed by all.
